North Sunshine Eagles’ first ever Australia Cup campaign on the national stage ended in the quarter-finals, but not before the club wrote itself into the record books.

The Eagles opened their national-stage campaign against NPL South Australia’s FK Beograd and came through to set up a Round of 16 tie against Heidelberg United — the reigning NPL Victoria champions and 2025 Australia Cup runners-up.

Few outside the club gave the Eagles a chance. What followed was one of the great nights in NSEFC’s history, with goalkeeper Rory Brian saving two penalties in the shootout to send North Sunshine through to a national quarter-final.

That took the club to Brisbane, and a meeting with NPL Queensland premiers Lions FC — a side who had already knocked out Perth Glory and Melbourne City. Lions proved too strong on the night, scoring four first-half goals on their way to a 4–0 win.

The result doesn’t diminish the run. Football Australia described the Eagles’ story as one of the most compelling of the Cup, achieved against the backdrop of a difficult league season that ended in relegation from VPL1.
